Subject Overview:

The primary aims of the subject CP1500 are to provide the student with an understanding of the importance of database technology in today's society and how they can use this technolory to manage their own data requirements. The subject will include a detailed discussion of database design and the relational database model.

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should be able to:

  1. Describe the features of a database and a database management system;
  2. Describe the relational database model, its features and their rationale;
  3. Formulate queries in SQL;
  4. Understand the database development process;
  5. Model a databse using the Entity-Relationship model;
  6. Use the techniques of normalisation and describe their basis;
  7. Implement a database design as a relational database using MS Access;
