Selection
Selection can be a bit hard, especially at first.
Basically, with Polygon selection switched on (see the button down the
bottom or press space until it is selected), you drag (left mouse button
(LMB)) over the polygon you want. This selects all of the polygons in
line with where you dragged - e.g. the top and bottom of a cylinder.
Once you have released the mouse button with something selected, it then
switches from adding to the selection to subtracting from the selection.
So then you deselect the ones you don't want - e.g. the bottom of the
cylinder, by simply dragging over it in a different view.
This should work for most things, although you might find using the lasso
tool (right mouse button) easier for the initial selection for some things.

Lecture notes are provided as a guide of
the content of lectures for pre-reading, revision and for
students who cannot attend lectures. While almost every
effort is made to make the online notes as complete as possible,
there is always material discussed in lectures that is not
in the notes.
You should not rely on these notes only!
If you miss a lecture and you do not understand something
in the notes, you should consult (in this order) other students,
the tutors, or the lecturer to try to work it out.
You are expected to read these lecture
notes as well as attending lectures, as vital information
is contained in both.
